Falls are among the leading causes of worker deaths and injuries in general industry. OSHA's Walking-Working Surfaces standard (29 CFR 1910 Subpart D, updated in 2017) requires fall protection when workers are exposed to falls of 4 feet or more — compared to 6 feet in construction. This lower threshold reflects the reality that falls in industrial settings (onto concrete, into machinery, into chemical tanks) can be just as fatal from shorter heights. The standard covers floors, platforms, runways, ramps, scaffolds, ladders, and rooftops in general industry settings.

Floor loading: every floor must support the loads placed upon it safely. Maximum safe load limits must be posted in areas where loading might be a hazard (storage areas, floor above heavy machinery). Aisles and passageways must be kept clear, adequately illuminated, and wide enough for safe movement of workers and vehicles. Wet surfaces must be kept as dry as possible, or appropriate drainage and anti-slip flooring or mats must be provided. Slip, trip, and fall prevention requires consistent housekeeping: immediately cleaning up spills, removing debris from walkways, securing cords and hoses across walkways, and maintaining floor surfaces in good repair.

Wall openings and floor openings require guarding. Wall openings from which there is a drop of 4 feet or more must have a guardrail or equivalent protection. Floor openings must be guarded by a standard railing, have a solid cover, or otherwise protect workers from falling through. Fixed ladders over 24 feet require fall protection (cage, well, personal fall arrest system, or ladder safety device). Platforms and runways more than 4 feet above the floor require standard guardrails (top rail 42 inches, midrail, toeboards) or personal fall arrest systems. Proper footwear and attention to environmental conditions are also key elements of walking-working surface safety.
