Materials Handling and Storage
Manual lifting: bend at knees, back straight, load close to body, avoid twisting. Loads over 50 lbs require team lift (two workers minimum) or mechanical assist. Designate one person to lead team lifts. Mechanical handling: forklifts require OSHA-certified operators, must not exceed rated capacity (check load chart for load center distance), travel with forks 6-8 inches above ground. Crane picks require pre-lift meetings, load chart review, exclusion zones (no workers under loads), and tag lines. Rigging hardware (slings, shackles, hooks) must never exceed working load limits.
Storage principles for construction sites: stable and level stacking surfaces, heavy items lowest, secure tall stacks against falling (band, chain, or brace). Lumber stacked with stickers for air circulation and stability. Compressed gas cylinders: upright, chained or strapped, valve caps on, oxygen separated from fuel gas by 20 feet or 5-foot non-combustible barrier. Flammable liquids in approved safety cans, maximum 25 gallons per fire area without sprinklers, away from ignition sources. Secondary containment for liquid chemicals.
For OSHA 30 supervisors: develop a site materials management plan that addresses delivery zones, storage areas, and traffic flow. Ensure forklift operators are current on certification (every 3 years or when unsafe operation is observed). Conduct regular crane safety briefings. Establish and enforce housekeeping standards — construction site debris and disorganized materials cause slip, trip, and struck-by hazards. Regular walkthrough inspections with documentation keep storage areas safe and organized.
